S-3D Engine Turbine |
One of the more interesting exhibits at the USSRC is a cut-away S-3D turbopump turbine (while it's billed as a "turbopump", it is properly only the turbine; the full turbopump assembly would include the turbine, gear box, and the fuel and oxidizer turbopumps). The S-3D was the engine used in the Jupiter and Thor missiles, but Rocketdyne packaged the same turbopump, the Mark 3, in many early engines, including those used on the Atlas, Thor, and Jupiter, in addition to the H-1. Perhaps the USSRC chose to dissect an S-3D turbopump because they had a spare Jupiter turbopump laying around? While more compact and higher-performing, this turbine shows many similarities to the turbine used on the V-2 turbopump and even in a WWII-era U.S. Navy torpedo. |
