Detail of the first-stage turbine wheel.

Picture 2 of 2.

Note that the second-stage turbine wheel, at rear, has a larger diameter and has larger blades than the first-stage wheel. This is because the hot gases have given up some velocity to spin the first-stage wheel, so the second-stage must be larger to extract an equivalent amount of energy.
