The Cosmosphere displays the only cut-away H-1 rocket engine of which I'm
aware, an H-1D (outboard) engine.
In addition to the regenerative cooling tubes being cut open for inspection,
the turbine exhaust hood and portions of the heat exchanger have been removed,
allowing the visitor to see the turbine wheel and heat exchanger coils.
The Cosmosphere moved the engine between my visits. When I visited in 2008, it
was in a relatively dark hallway (approximately where the Mars rovers are currently located) with
spot lighting (which made it difficult to take an evenly-exposed photo). By
the end of 2013, it had been moved to a more permanent location just outside
Dr. Goddard's
Lab. While the lighting is better in its new location, it's closer to
the wall, so it is no longer possible to photograph the turbine disc (luckily, I did so back in 2005).
I have a number of H-1-related
resources.
