Jupiter Tail Unit Interior |
Photos from under a Jupiter missile's aft skirt, inside the tail unit. Strictly speaking, this is the interior of the Juno II rocket in the Rocket Park, but since the Juno II is just a Jupiter missile with additional upper stages, there's really no difference between the two when viewed from the inside like this. While the aft skirt of the USSRC's Jupiter missile is sealed off, it was possible to duck under the aft skirt of the Juno II and stand inside it prior to the rocket's restoration. On a production missile, a flame curtain would shroud Jupiter's S-3D engine. Unlike the Jupiter at Air Power Park, this Jupiter does not have a full interior. Rather, there's a large-diameter pole used to keep the missile upright, with just the aft portion of a thrust chamber welded to the pole to give the appearance of an engine when viewed from the outside. However, this does give us the opportunity to see the cross-section of the regenerative cooling tubes comprising the thrust chamber. |
