Return to Space Center Houston

F-1 Engine

The F-1 engine, part of the Rocket Park, is Johnson Space Center property, rather than Space Center Houston property. SCH runs a tram tour, driving through parts of the JSC campus, and stopping at at least one building, depending upon the specific tour (when we visited, one tour stopped at Mission Control and another stopped at the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility).

Toward the end of the tour, the tram stops at the Rocket Park. On one of the tours, we were allowed to take any later tram back to SCH. On a tour the next day, we were told that the stop would be something like 20 minutes long and that we had to take the same tram back to SCH. When I asked the guide why we couldn't stay (we rode the first tram and I had planned on staying most of the day), she said something about staffing levels. However, she also told me that we could leave SCH and go through one of JSC's gates to get to the Rocket Park. It's even free. (Of course, the devious part of mind wondered what would stop someone from getting into JSC Rocket Park for free and then taking a tram into SCH ...)

The F-1 engine is at the northeast corner of the Saturn V building (Google Maps link).

I was only able to find one ID tag on the engine proper, and it was not the "master" ID tag, so I don't know the engine's serial number.
