Glenn Research Center is located in Cleveland, Ohio. Since it's an active government installation, visiting required a security inspection. Also, pictures of the grounds were prohibited unless properly escorted; I arranged such an escort for my final visit to Glenn. Highlights of the visitor center include the command module from the second manned Skylab mission, Apollo space suits, an RL-10 engine, a lunar module Ascent Propulsion System engine, and a moon rock. In front of the visitor center, there are full-scale replicas of Centaur and Agena upper stages. GRC's web site is located here, and here is a quick link to their history page. GRC closed their on-site visitor center in September 2009. A number of artifacts, including the Apollo Command Module, were moved to the Great Lakes Science Center. The CM was moved on June 22, 2010; some of the other artifacts were apparently moved later. Not all of GRC's artifacts were transferred, and GRC and has a travelling exhibit called "Celebrating Apollo" which contains artifacts formerly displayed in the visitor center along with other artifacts which were not displayed there. |
