The green patches above the knees are Velcro, on which to mount checklists and other materials. Underneath the Velcro are pockets; on the similar S1034 suit, the suit's right leg has the knife pocket and the suit's left leg has a release valve pocket.

I am uncertain whether NASA thought the Shuttle astronauts needed a knife :-)
