Apollo 11 |
|
Apollo 11's Command Module, Columbia, was displayed in the Milestones of Flight Gallery by the Mall entrance during my visits. The north wall and the ceiling are largely made of glass, making this perhaps the most brightly-lit Command Module I've ever visited. There isn't much about the flight which I could sum up in these little comments I put with each artifact which everyone doesn't already know, so I'll just leave it at that. At the time, Apollo 11's hatch was displayed elsewhere in the museum. Beginning in 2018, the Smithsonian began a multi-year renovation project which included performing additional preservation on this Command Module. Prior to being placed back on display at the National Air and Space Museum, the Apollo 11 CM went on a nation-wide tour, "Destination Moon". I visited one of the tour stops and photographed Apollo 11 there. I have a number of Command/Service Module-related resources. |
