Pads 39 A/B

The launch pads at Launch Complex 39 (LC-39) were originally built for launching Saturn Vs for the Apollo program. LC-39 also launched the final four Saturn IB missions (three visits to Skylab, plus the Apollo-Soyuz Test Program (ASTP). The pads were subsequently modified for use in the Shuttle program. Prior to Barack Obama cancelling the Constellation program, work was underway to convert the pads to launch Ares I and Ares V vehicles.

The free bus tour takes the visitor fairly close to the pads, to the LC-39 Observation Gantry. When we visited, both of the additional-fee tours drove much closer to the pads, and the NASA Up Close tour actually stopped at a small observation deck much closer to the pads.

Aerial view of the general pad area.

See my page on Launch Complexes 39A, 39B, 39C, and 39D.

As of now, I have not yet sorted through all of my pictures from Kennedy, but some other page references this location. Thus, this is a "place holder" version right now, with only the pictures actually referenced. Come back some time later to see if I've finished up, or drop me an email to request me to prioritize the rest of these pictures.
