Borman's Apollo 8 Communications Carrier ("Snoopy Cap")

In Projects Mercury and Gemini, communications earphones and microphones were part of the helmet. For Apollo, with its bubble helmet, it was necessary to affix this communication equipment directly to the astronaut's head. Thus the communications carrier came to be.

The "Snoopy cap" was soft-suspension skullcap providing redundant (independent) earphones and microphones, with necessary straps to keep the cap in place. The ear seals were deerskin-leather-covered foam inserts. The communications carrier had a 21-pin electrical connector, which could connect either directly to the spacecraft communications system or through the space suit's internal communication harness.
