Aldrin Apollo 11 LEVA and Gloves |
The exhibit included part of Buzz Aldrin's Apollo 11 space suit, the lunar extravehicular visor assembly (LEVA) and EVA gloves. The left glove has a lunar surface checklist sewn onto its gauntlet. The LEVA was worn over the standard Apollo bubble helmet during extravehicular activities (lunar EVAs and, on later missions, the trans-Earth spacewalks to retrieve film canisters from the service module's scientific instrument module bay (SIM bay). The EVA gloves, with their grey palm and back hand areas and the blue fingertips, are probably what most people think of when they think of Apollo space suit gloves. However, these gloves were worn only during moonwalks and spacewalks; during other phases of the mission which required the astronauts to be suited up, they wore intravehicular gloves. The LEVA is Smithsonian catalog #A19730041001, the right glove is #A19730041003, and the left glove is #A19730041002. |
