View of the forward hatch and the porch (more formally called the "egress platform").

Picture 1 of 2.

To exit the spacecraft, the astronauts would get on their hands and knees and back out of the hatch (eventually wriggling backwards on their bellies), stopping on the porch, before moving the to ladder on the landing leg.

Also note, to the left of the porch, the handle for the MESA deployment lanyard. When on the porch, the mission commander would pull the lanyard, deploying the MESA. Stowed on the MESA was a television camera aimed at the ladder, which gave the world a live view of the crew's first steps on the moon.
