The sign beneath the Miss Baker couch display. It reads
Background image above: Baker poses on a
model of the Army's Jupiter launch vehicle, May
29, 1959. The Able-Baker mission and other animal flights paved the way for
humans in space.
Baker's Flight Capsule
This small biocapsule housed the 11-ounce
monkey, Baker. Electrodes monitored her condition in flight. Crewmate Able
died four days after the mission during surgery to remove an electrode.
"Miss Baker" was tiny, but she became a huge celebrity. She lived at the U.S.
Space & Rocket Center (image right) until 1984, when she died at the ripe old
age of 27. Fans visit her
gravesite on our grounds.
