Primate Pioneers
On May 29, 1959, Jupiter AM-18 lifted
off with two special passengers: Able, a rhesus monkey, and Baker, a squirrel
monkey. The "monkeynauts" flew to an altitude of 360 miles, at speeds over
10,000 miles per hour. They were recovered alive after surviving nine minutes
of weightlessness and a peak force of 38 Gs.
