In the event of permanent pressure loss of the Command Module, the astronauts might be sealed in their spacesuit for days at a time. In the event of a medical emergency, it might be necessary for an astronaut to receive an injection from the medical kit. To allow an injection to be given through the suit's pressure bladder, this self-sealing biomedical injection patch was built into the suit.
