One of the signs on the fence at the aft end of the S-IC. It reads
Saturn V Restoration Project
Restoration of the Saturn V 500F, which is a National Historic Landmark and
National Mechanical Engineering Landmark, began in June and is
expected to be completed by early September.
The work on the Saturn V 500F moon rocket is being done by Conservation Solutions,
Inc., which also did restoration work on the Saturn V rocket at the Johnson
Space Center.
Restoration of the Huntsville Saturn V will include
- Cleaning the three stages of the 363-foot rocket
- Cleaning and removing the engines
- Repairing damage to the rocket caused by more than 30 years of exposure
to weather
- Recoating all original stages
Once the restoration work is completed, the rocket will be moved into a
facility that will be built in front of the Marriott
Hotel, which is located on the east side of the U.S. Space & Rocket
Center property.
At the time this sign was created (and this picture taken), the plan was to
have a temporary building by the Marriott. As announced
at the Third Annual
Saturn/Apollo Reunion (2006), this plan was subsequently modified to
include the permanent building today known as the Davidson Center for Space
Exploration.
