After the hot gasses from the liquid propellant gas generator have spun the turbine, they are discharged into the turbine exhaust hood, where they are redirected to the heat exchanger (not installed on this H-1), finally venting into the aspirator. The exhaust gasses are expelled through the aspirator to avoid the fuel-rich gasses from recirculating at the stage's boattail, where they could backfire. See my page on Saturn I/IB turbine exhaust. This closure has been painted over so many times that the part number molded into the plastic has been nearly completed filled in, and is no longer legible. | ||||
