The R4D Skytrain became the first aircraft to land at the South Pole, October 31, 1956. With the commander of "Operation Deep Freeze", Rear Admiral George Dufek aboard, the flight was made in preparation for the 1957 International Geophysical Year. A C-124 Globemaster II circled overhead during the landing. | ||||
