A Delta II model. This appears to be a Delta II 7925H (which NASA seems to call a 2925H). It has nine graphite-epoxy motor (GEM) solid rocket motors strapped to the first stage. This configuration launched such missions the Dawn mission to Vesta and Ceres, the Deep Impact mission to comet Tempel 1, and the Mars Pathfinder. The Delta launch vehicle family originated when an upper stage was mated to a former Thor missile, the latter manufactured by the Douglas Aircraft Company. Later Deltas shared nothing other than its name with the original Thor-Delta. For additional information on the Delta II, see the United Launch Alliance Delta II page. | ||||
