View of the "cat eyes," openings between the regenerative cooling tubes where the turbine exhaust gases are dumped. Dumping the turbine exhaust into the thrust chamber in this fashion enhanced the engine's specific impulse.

The engine also employs a "pass and a half" regenerative cooling scheme: The hydrogen fuel is introduced at the fuel inlet manifold, where 180 "down" regenerative cooling tubes, running only from the fuel inlet manifold to the engine's exit plane, are added to the 360 full-length "up" tubes.
