R4D (Flight Line)

The R4D is the Naval version of the C-47 Skytrain/Gooney Bird.

This particular R4D, Que Sera Sera, was the first aircraft to land on the South Pole, on October 31, 1956. When I visited, it was still fitted with skis for landing on the snow.

When I visited, the R4D was outdoors, on the flight line, partially disassembled. Visiting the Naval Aviation Museum's Aircraft on Display page, and clicking the "C-47 (R4D) Skytrain" link (sorry, they have one of those annoying web sites with pop-ups that prevent other web sites from providing a direct link) shows that the R4D has been restored and is now displayed indoors.
