Project Gemini G4C Suit

The Smithsonian had a gallery depicting the evolution of space suits; one of the suits is the Gemini G4C suit, worn on all Gemini missions except Gemini 3 (on which an earlier version, the G3C, was worn; the G3C is visually nearly identical to the G4C) and Gemini 7 (on which a lighter-weight suit, the G5C, was worn).

The G4C was a modified version of the G3C better suited for EVA missions. Gemini 3 was the first manned flight of the Gemini spacecraft; it was to be a short (3-orbit) mission without EVA. To support EVA on later flights, the G3C was modified with additional layers of insulation. The pilot's suit (it was the pilot, rather than the commander, who performed the EVAs on Gemini mission) had additional modifications.

On Gemini 9, which was to feature the astronaut maneuvering unit (AMU), the G4C was further modified with the addition of a layer of Chromel-R, a cloth woven from stainless steel fibers, to the legs to protect from the AMU's hot exhaust gases.
