Detail of one of the gimbal actuators.

The four outer F-1 engines were each fitted with two such gimbal actuators, which attached to the engines' gimbal outriggers, to steer the engines. These four engines could be gimballed 6° any direction from center. The engines mated to the stage via a gimbal bearing, which was designed to enable this movement.
