J-2 Engine (Building 4205)

Some time between October 2008 and July 2009, a J-2 engine was moved to Bldg 4205 and parked next to F-1 F-4023 (approximately as indicated in this Google Maps link). I understand that this J-2 was previously stored in Building 7241 on Redstone Arsenal; in fact, I originally thought that this was one of the engines that I saw there in February 2009.

The engine lacks near all of its hardware and is really little more than a thrust chamber.

Saturn identifies this as J-2 engine J-2111, which was at one time a completed engine but subsequently had its turbomachinery removed. By the time of my September 2013 visit, this engine had been removed from its dolly, its protective covers had been removed, and it was sitting vertical a short distance away, behind Building 4205.

For a time, the engine's true identity eluded me, as the ID plate on the engine implied that its serial number was J-2113. The bill of lading on the dolly identified it as J-2146. I knew it couldn't have been J-2113, as Alan Lawrie informed me that J-2113 was launched on Apollo 15's S-II (second) stage. Alan eventually identified it via other means, and on my September 2013 trip, I was able to see the engine's serial number, J-2111, stencilled on the side of the thrust chamber.
