The glass panel displayed here was removed from the launch control room at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station launch complex 5/6 where Alan Shepard was launched on his historic sub-orbital flight. The thickness was necessary protection from the rocket's giant blast because the block-house was less than 100 yards (91 meters) from the launch pad.
