Launch Complex 5/6 |
Although not part of Kennedy Space Center, Launch Complex 5/6 was accessible through the Then & Now tour once offered by the KSC Visitor Information Center. The bus drives up to the south side of Pad 5, and while visitors are allowed to exit the bus, they are not allowed to move freely around the area (i.e., required to stand in a restricted area). In addition to the blockhouse, there's a Mercury-Redstone erected on Pad 5, from which the Redstone launches of Project Mercury were launched. There's also an empty Redstone launch table on Pad 6. I understand that the blockhouse is now a museum, but it was not open to visitors when I visited in the summer of 2005. It was shortly before we visited that summer that NASA found the MOL spacesuits in the blockhouse (perhaps they were doing the initial work to prepare it for visitors at that time). |
