Return to Kennedy Space Center

Launch Complex 5/6

Although not part of Kennedy Space Center, Launch Complex 5/6 is accessible through the Then & Now tour offered by the KSC Visitor Information Center. The bus drives up to the south side of Pad 5, and visitors are not allowed to move freely around the area (i.e., required to stand behind a yellow line).

In addition to the blockhouse, there's a Mercury-Redstone erected on Pad 5, from which the Redstone launches of Project Mercury were launched. There's also an empty Redstone launch table on Pad 6.

I understand that the blockhouse is now a museum, but it was not open to visitors when I visited in the summer of 2005. It was shortly before we visited that summer that NASA found the MOL spacesuits in the blockhouse (perhaps they were doing the initial work to prepare it for visitors at that time).
