Adjoining the Apollo/Saturn V Center to the south are the bleachers of the launch viewing area. This area is about 3 miles due west of LC-39A. As I recall, 3 miles was the minimum safe distance should a Saturn V explode; I don't recall hearing any similar statistic for a Shuttle.
