Views of the downlock deployment mechanisms on some of the LM legs.

Picture 2 of 5.

The LM's legs are folded up during launch; they are not deployed until lunar orbit, a few hours before undocking.

The downlock deployment mechanism is a spring-loaded device, attached to both the descent stage's structure and the leg's truss assembly, which ensures that the LM's legs remain deployed.
