Redstone Center Unit |
During my various visits, the Mercury-Redstone formerly displayed at the Michigan Space & Science Center has been in storage, disassembled. It was first in the North Campus, largely inaccessible, but then moved to the East Campus where it is usually more accessible (depending upon what is being restored at the time). By special permission of the Senior Conservator, I've been able to get even closer to the Redstone components. Since this Redstone was originally a tactical missile, rather than an actual Mercury-Redstone, the Smithsonian has apparently told the Air Zoo that if they restore it for display, it must be displayed as a Redstone missile, not a Mercury-Redstone. The Redstone center unit is tightly packed in a corner surrounded by other large artifacts, preventing me from getting any good overall shots of the missile's exterior; however, there is room to photograph the interior of the aft end of the missile body. |
