F-1 Engine |
The F-1 engine is located in a corner of the East Campus building. When the East Campus housed the Michigan Space Science Center exhibit hall, a J-2 engine was displayed next to it (the J-2 has been subsequently moved to the Main Campus). This F-1 was previously displayed at the old Michigan Space & Science Center. The Air Zoo came up with a novel way to display this engine: Most F-1s are displayed either vertically directly on the ground, or horizontally on a transportation dolly. The Air Zoo's F-1 is mounted in a metal framework and displayed vertically, perhaps eight feet off the ground; visitors may walk underneath the engine and, indeed, the interior of the engine is lit. Additionally, the steps to the second floor are right next to the F-1, affording an elevated view of one side of the engine. The only engines of which I'm aware which are displayed in a fashion similar are the engine at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, Australia (one of the few F-1 engines I've not yet visited) and the one at the Cosmosphere. Alan Lawrie has identified this as engine F-041, a development engine. |
