Shepard - Mercury to the Moon
Alan Shepard's Mercury-Redstone 3 flight on
May 5, 1961, was the catalyst for President Kennedy's bold
goal of an American on the moon. Ten years later, Shepard became the
only Mercury astronaut to reach the Moon, commanding Apollo 14.
Shepard used this hand control stick to pilot the Lunar Module Antares to a
smooth touchdown at Fra Mauro.
