Return to Air Force Museum

Apollo 15 (Presidential Hangar)

Our very first visit to the Air Force Museum was less planned than most of our visits: We had visited the Neil Armstrong Air & Space Museum and finished up there a bit earlier than planned. We had an hour or two to kill, so we decided to stop in at the Air Force Museum yet that afternoon, rather than wait for the next morning as originally planned.

Looking for Apollo 15, we hurried through the galleries, gaping at the sights which would have to wait until the next day, but there was no Apollo 15 to be found. We inquired at the information desk, which was manned by volunteers much more familiar with the airplanes than the spacecraft. Someone thought it was here, while another thought it was there. Unfortunately, Apollo 15 was nowhere to be found.

After that initial visit, we had two full days at the museum. As our visit was winding down on the afternoon of the last day, we decided to take the tour to the Presidential and Research & Development hangars. I had taken my camera back to the car, as the tour involved a bus ride and I didn't want to lug my equipment around the bus.

After looking at the planes in the R&D hangar, we went through the Presidential hangar. Upon exiting one plane, we were able to over a temporary wall and what should greet us but Apollo 15! We found a volunteer, who let us behind the wall to visit with Apollo 15. I cursed myself for not having my camera, and photos of Apollo 15 had to wait until our next visit to the Air Force Museum.

Apollo 15 was eventually moved from the Presidential hangar to the Missile & Space Gallery, sometime between our October 2003 and our October 2005 visits.

As of now, I have not yet sorted through all of my pictures of Apollo 15 when it was in the Presidential Hangar, but some other page references this location. Thus, this is a "place holder" version right now, with only the pictures actually referenced. Come back some time later to see if I've finished up, or drop me an email to request me to prioritize the rest of these pictures.
