Behind the Scenes

Lunar Excursion Module Simulator

In front of you is the actual training vehicle used by Apollo astronauts to practice landing on the Moon. Suspended from a giant gantry at the NASA Langley Research Center, LEMS recreated the special challenges of flying the final approach to the Moon - while standing up! The ground beneath the vehicle was configured to look like the lunar surface to simulate the unfamiliar, disorienting landscape that would greet astronauts on their otherworldly voyage.
