Photos of the honeycomb insulation on the S-II stage.

Picture 3 of 6.

The type of insulation on the S-II-D/F stage exactly matches the insulation on none of the flight stages: The honeycomb insulation on this stage is 0.8" thick; the honeycomb insulation thickness was increased to 1.6" thick to address issues of "stratification of LH2 in large diameter tanks". S-II-1 through S-II-7 (Apollo 4, Apollo 6, Apollo 8, Apollo 9, Apollo 10, Apollo 11, and Apollo 12) used the 1.6" insulation. S-II-8 (Apollo 13) and subsequent used a spray-on insulation.

For additional information, see my S-II insulation page.
