Detail of the forward end of the 103 engine. This is an early engine, which had internally tied high pressure ducts which were straight and incorporated bellows which were covered by silver bellows covers. The heat exchanger and turbine exhaust manifold are an odd patina color which I've not seen on any other F-1s. Since the museum's outdoors F-1 does not feature this color and the engine currently has a more natural color, I can't help but wonder whether they were purposely painted this color. Also note the gimbal outrigger arms (patina color on the engine itself) and the gimbal actuator (disappearing into the engine fairing) near the top of this photo. | ||||
