Detail of the model's short cable mast. As one might guess from its name, there was also a long cable mast. The long cable mast was used only on the first two Block I Saturn I launches, SA-1 and SA-2; by the time SA-3 was launched, the long cable mast had been replaced by an umbilical tower. Yet the term "short" cable mast lived on. (The Jupiter missile, also developed at Marshall Space Flight Center also had a long and short cable mast, so I suppose the engineers were used to the terminology.) | ||||
