Overall shot of the pilot's hatch using ambient lighting. The Mercury spacecraft was large enough for only a single astronaut, so he was (of course) the pilot. With the Gemini spacecraft requiring a two-man crew, there was something of a problem as to what to call the astronaut not flying the spacecraft. To call someone with an ego as large as an astronaut a "co-pilot" would not have worked, so the settled things by referring to the astronauts as the "command pilot" and the "pilot." | ||||
