Dunkirk

Dunkirk isn't located in Normandy, but rather in the north of France; however, since it's WWII-related and most of my other photos from France and Belgium are of WWI subjects, I decided to put my Dunkirk photos here.

We were in Bruges, Belgium, and so decided to drive the 45 miles to Dunkirk. We found the British War Graves Commission Memorial in the Dunkirk Town Cemetery and the nearby was the Dunkirk National Cemetery (Nécropole Nationale de Dunkerque), with its WWI French graves.

We then thought we'd drive to the English Channel, where we might imagine that Allied troops had been evacuated across the Channel. This turned out to be surprisingly difficult, given that Dunkirk is a coastal town, but we eventually did find a public beach. My wife and I could then say that we'd stood in the waters of both sides of the Atlantic (the other in Florida, near the Kennedy Space Center).
