View of the heat shield on the aft end of the Service Module.

The heat shield contains the SPS engine propellant service connectors (the oxidizer service connection is visible at the 3:00 position), which allow fill and drain of the Service Module's main fuel and oxidizer tanks. The heat shield also covers the associated plumbing and the aft tank bulkheads.
