The sign accompanying the suit. It reads

Mercury Spacesuit

Designed for suborbital and orbital flights, Mercury space suits were adaptations of the U.S. Navy's MK-IV pressure suit. They consist of an inner layer of Neoprene-coated fabric and a restraint layer of aluminized nylon. The suit is worn "soft" or unpressurized and serves as a backup for possible spacecraft cabin pressure loss.
