At the time, the museum exhibited the U-boat as having just left port. Since provisions were a limiting factor in the length of a U-boat tour, the museum wished to emphasize that food was stowed anywhere there was room. We see bread and sausage hanging from the ceiling and stowed under the bottom bunks.
