View of the hammer, circa 2003.

The accompanying sign reads

Astronaut Hammer

Astronauts needed special tools to work on the lunar surface, because they could not move their arms or hands easily. This hammer resembles a standard geologist's tools, but its handle is reshaped to be easily grasphed by clumsy space gloves.

Additional information on the hammer can be found on page 22 of the Catalog of Apollo Lunar Surface Geological Sampling Tools and Containers.
