From the top of the S-IC Test Stand, the view to the southwest includes the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge.

IBM veteran Luke Talley, who worked on the Instrument Unit and who volunteers at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center via the Emeritus Docents program, relayed an experience regarding S-IC test firings.

He explained how the flame deflector discharged into the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge. Between the roar and the percussion, it was quite an experience for all who witnessed. Among the witnesses were the many skunks who inhabited the Refugue. Unlike the human observers, the skunks didn't know what was going on, and the skunks had but one way to react to the unknown, so the entire area stank of skunk for days after the test.
