S-IC Test Stand Observation Bunker

Located just south of the S-IC Test Stand is the stand's observation bunker (Google Maps link). A reinforced concrete bunker built into a mound of earth, it provided engineers with the closest position from which to observe a static firing. The bunker was equipped with a test termination button and an intercom system for communicating with engineers in the blockhouse.

I visited this bunker after visiting the F-1 Engine Test Stand observation bunker, and found it to be quite a contrast. Rather than a simple concrete interior, the walls and ceiling were covered in 1960s-era ceiling tile and the bunker was equipped with three aircraft-style seats. I made a second visit a year later, when there was a temporary guard railing on top of the bunker, as it appears to have been used as a surveying position.

Also see a construction photo of this bunker.
