dsc93002.jpg

Detail of the fuel additive blender unit (FABU), located on the under side of the thrust chamber as it sits on its pallet.

The H-1 used RP-1, the engine's fuel, mixed with an additive (Oronite) from the FABU to lubricate the turbopumps and gearbox.

The FABU's red heater assembly has been partially removed; see the H-1 engine at Stennis for photos of a FABU's heater assembly laced up as it would be when installed in a Saturn first stage.
