Atlas | ||||
When we visited (apparently until some time in 2013), an Atlas sat on a transporter behind Hangar C, near the lighthouse. The "Then and Now" tour drives past this hangar (or at least it did back in 2005). The missile appears to be displayed without its thrust structure. This Atlas doesn't seem to appear on any of the usual lists of surviving missiles (e.g., Wikipedia, The Field Guide to American Spacecraft's booster list, or Atlas: The Ultimate Weapon). The tour guide said that it was an Atlas A, but the Website of the Cape Canaferal Space Force Museum calls it an Atlas F. These pictures were taken from a moving vehicle, so they may be of limited use identifying the missile. Similarly, the Museums' Website doesn't show the engine area (Atlas A was the first, R&D version of the Atlas and can be readily identified because it had only booster engines, lacking the middle sustainer engine). | ||||
