Gemini 3 (pre-renovation) |
The interior of the Grissom Memorial underwent renovation from the end of 2008 until April 2009 and was "officially rededicated" on July 18 as part of the park's annual "Grissom Day" celebration. The pictures here were taken prior to the renovation, depicting the spacecraft's appearance from our first visit in 2002 through 2008; I also have pictures of Gemini 3 after this renovation. It appears that the Memorial's been renovated at least once before; for a photo of Gemini 3 in an even older setting, see my vintage Molly Brown page. Gemini 3 (also known as Molly Brown, the only Gemini spacecraft to be christened) sat atop a tall pedestal, with a staircase spiraling around it. Unfortunately, there were high-intensity spot lights aimed at various spots around the spacecraft, making it difficult to get a properly-exposed photo of the entire spacecraft. There was a second story of the memorial (containing a few artifacts) offering a view of the command pilot's side of the spacecraft (the command pilot's hatch was displayed separately). As of now, I have not yet sorted through all of my pictures of Gemini 3, but some other page references this location. Thus, this is a "place holder" version right now, with only the pictures actually referenced. Come back some time later to see if I've finished up, or drop me an email to request me to prioritize the rest of these pictures. |
