The boost protective cover (BPC) release on the exterior of the hatch.

During launch, the command module is enclosed by the BCP to protect it against aerodynamic heating. The BPC has a hatch which covers the command module's crew hatch. As the hatch is opened from the inside, it activates a release mechanism between the crew hatch and the BPC hatch. The mechanism releases the BPC hatch and allows the two hatches to swing open together.
