The various colored strips radiating outward around the periphery of the optics are temperature-sensitve tapes, used to determine maximum temperature during reentry. Similarly, there are thermal strips on the lower edge of the sextant.

A heatshield panel has been removed from around the optics as well as the optics themselves. I have post-mission inspection photos of this area of the spacecraft.
