The unablated heat shield sample, Smithsonian catalog #A19751421000;

A staff member told me that the dark smudges on this heat shield sample are from an employee handling the sample without gloves (I understood him to mean an employee in the 1960s). Over the years, the oils left on the heat shield from the employee's fingers attracted dust, leaving the dark spots.
